5 Brand NEW things to do in Port Elizabeth

It’s no secret that we absolutely adore our beautiful city and love to share all the wonderful things you can do in and around this amazing little Eastern Cape seaside metro.  The enthusiasm for our hometown paradise seems to be catching, and Port Elizabeth is dominating the travel social media airwaves lately, with tons of suggestions on all the incredible things you can do in Nelson Mandela Bay.

We were delighted to discover 5 brand new things to do in Port Elizabeth this week, and are as proud as punch to introduce them to you:

1. Nelson Mandela Bay Travel Guide App

What a beauty! This visual, easy to use app contains everything you need to know about what’s hot and happening in Nelson Mandela Bay. It has sections on upcoming events, things to do, accommodation, business, transport, emergency contacts and even where to get free wifi. We adore its interactive map of things to do and the audio guides to some of PE’s historical and tourist sites.  This is an absolute must-have for all NMB residents and for anyone visiting or thinking of visiting our neck of the woods.

Click here to download the app on the App Store, Google play or Windows Store.

2. Blend of the Bay

Not only do we have the oldest coffee roastery in South Africa, but we now also have our very own unique city blend of coffee. “The Blend of The Bay” by Mastertons Coffee and Tea Specialists puts to good use their unrivaled 92 years of experience in producing rich and refined flavours to inspire and captivate the taste buds of us lovers of a good cup of java.

3. Waterfront Cruises

Port Elizabeth is holding its breath for a cosmopolitan waterfront development, adding entertainment, dining, retail and contemporary living space to its picturesque working harbour. We breathed a small sigh of relief as we heard about the launch of PE’s waterfront cruises. This is the first step in the right direction and hopefully the start of great things to come.

Stampede Cruises has a stylish Catamaran (proudly Eastern Cape built) which departs from Algoa Bay Yacht Club and offers a scenic cruise along the waterfront past Summerstrand to Cape Recife and back. The Blue Pearl is a rigid hull inflatable boat that will whisk you around PE’s coastline – giving you a fish eye view of the city with some education on marine conservation on the way.

4. Ama Tuk-Tuk city tour

Durban has rickshaws, Cape Town has motorised bicycles and PE has a Tuk-Tuk! Departing from Bayworld, this cute little red 3 wheeler will zip you along the beachfront to the Cape Recife Nature Reserve where you can enjoy the history and spectacular views and take a pic of the photogenic lighthouse. Then it’s back along the coastline to the Donkin reserve where you can climb up the lighthouse for the most magnificent view of PE, dance along a colourful mosaic, hold hands with Nelson Mandela, stare up at one of the largest South African flags in the world and snap a selfie in front of PE’s stone pyramid. The Ama Tuk-Tuk Beacons of Hope tour is one of the latest additions to the Nelson Mandela Bay Pass.

5. Your very own Angora goat

Did you know that the Karoo produces the most mohair in the world? In 1838 the Sultan of Turkey sent twelve Angora rams and one female ewe to Port Elizabeth. He wanted to protect his country’s powerful mohair empire, so all the rams were neutered. What he didn’t realise was that the ewe was pregnant and gave birth to a kid ram en-route to Africa. And so started the booming Eastern Cape mohair trade.

Now you can own your own little Angora goat when you visit Mohair South Africa’s stylish Walmer headquarters. Pop into the showroom, where you can chat to the friendly staff about the fascinating industry, browse through their library of fashion books and buy mohair items from twenty local mohair manufacturers.

And if you have a valid Nelson Mandela Bay Pass, you get this cute little Angora goat to take home as a memento.

So that is five brand new reasons to love Port Elizabeth, five more worthwhile things to add to your to-do list, and five more ways for our family to feel proud about our city.

Don’t forget to use the hashtag #sharethebay in any photos you post in Nelson Mandela Bay – there are some super prizes up for grabs in Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism’s A Whole Lotta Summer campaign.
