Mauritius Shandrani – a family review

Mauritius Shandrani – a family review

Beachcomber Shandrani is family paradise, and in our opinion offers the best of the beautiful island of Mauritius.

We visited during a balmy July winter, with gloriously warm temperatures in the mid-twenties (Celcius).

Location, location, location
We love nature, and always choose a destination that offers natural beauty. Shandrani is located on a protected marine reserve – Blue Bay Marine Park. This means that the reef is vibrant and teeming with colourful tropical fish and live coral and you can enjoy snorkelling right from the beach. As with many African tropical shores, a lot of the reefs around Mauritius are damaged, but Blue Bay Marine Reserve is still in pretty good shape.

The hotel is located on a peninsula around a bay, and has three large, beautiful and completely different beaches as well as lots of little coves and smaller beaches to enjoy. Most of the hotel borders the marine park in the lagoon, and one of the beaches is on the wild side with crashing waves unprotected by a reef.

Whatever the direction of the wind, you can find a sheltered spot!

Beachcomber hospitality
The Beachcomber group really knows how to manage a large hotel, and keep hundreds of people blissfully happy. As with all the other Beachcomber hotels we have visited, the gardens at Shandrani are beautiful – loads of palm trees and fragrant tropical flowers. The rooms are practically designed and elegant, and all look right onto the beach. The food is magnificently decadent, and we loved the five star all-inclusive package, with a choice of 5 restaurants, 10 page wine lists, famous Mauritian cocktails and of course the Magnum ice creams at the beach bars! Even though the hotel is really large, and seemed quite busy, we didn’t have to fight for a lounger, or queue for tables. The Beachcomber staff are warm and friendly and made our whole family feel special and welcome.

Fishing
This is vital in our choice of holiday destination, and Shandrani did not disappoint. Although fishing is not permitted in the marine reserve, you can fish from about half the hotel’s beaches, and our boys had some wonderful success with barracuda, trevally, emperor, couta, captain, trumpet fish and many others on both fly and lure.

Close to airport
Shandrani is located right next to Mauritius’ international airport, which means a very short 5 minutes drive from the airport and you are in paradise. No precious time wasted sitting in traffic while taxiing across the island, and no need to get up at the crack of dawn to get to the airport on time.

Watch the end of our video clip for an amazing aerial view of the hotel as we reluctantly left an island with a very special place in our hearts, and a hotel that delighted us in every single way.
