Top 6 PE Restaurants for Sunday Lunch

Top 6 PE Restaurants for Sunday Lunch

There is nothing like a long, lazy Sunday lunch with your family and Port Elizabeth offers a wonderful selection of restaurants to enjoy. Here are our best 6 PE Restaurants for Sunday lunch, as chosen by each member of our family (in no particular order):

  1. Bridge Street Brewery in Baakens Valley (Ralph’s choice)
With its contemporary café style décor and soothing jazz tones, when you sit at Bridge Street Brewery it feels like you are somewhere in Europe, not in the centre of PE. The beverages are divine – as the name suggests, they brew their own craft beers, and all their drinks are served ice cold in classy glassware. On Sundays they have a live light jazz duo who go down SO well with a glass or two of wine! The food is also amazingly good. Our whole family’s favourite is the chicken breast with black cherries and brie – healthy and delicious!

  2. Cattle Baron at Addo Elephant National Park (Sarah’s selection)
This choice is all about the location. PE people are so lucky to be able to hop in the car, and within 30 minutes be quietly absorbing the peaceful atmosphere of the wild African bush. There is nowhere else on earth where you can nip out and within an hour be enjoying the flapping of giant ears, the splashing and spraying at waterholes and the soothing vocal rumbles of majestic elephants in their natural environment. We usually enter through the Mathyolweni gate in the morning and drive through the park to the main camp for lunch. The Cattle Baron restaurant offers a large menu in a charmingly African safari environment, and is always a real treat.

  3. Ocean Basket at Brookes on the Bay (Jacob’s vote)
What a view! Best enjoyed on a clear day, the Ocean Basket offers a sublime seafood menu with a 180 degree vista of Algoa Bay. Somehow fish always tastes better when you are looking at the sea! We just love the family seafood patters – the prawns, crispy squid heads, mussels and delicious fish never disappoint. The Ocean Basket is also really affordable for a seafood restaurant, and the service is spot on. Jacob and his brothers love the decadent Italian kisses at the end of the meal, and the Baklava does it for me!

  4. Cape Town Fish Market at King’s Court (Luke’s top spot)
We have never had a bad meal at CTFM. The food is amazing! In summer it’s lovely to sit in the sun on the veranda, and inside is just as nice. We love the conveyor belt sushi bar, which serves up some of the best sushi in town, and Luke’s favourite meal is the seared tuna. The seafood curries are perfect, especially in winter, and the teppanyaki is divine. It’s always a treat to dine at CTFM!

  5. The Boma on Sardinia Bay Road (Cian’s favourite)
Cian’s first choice is always The Boma. He loves the outdoor play area, and the kids’ meals, especially the chicken nuggets and picnic basket. Its forest environment is absolutely beautiful and although the food takes long to arrive, when it does, it tastes like heaven. Dogs are welcome at The Boma, so this is the perfect spot to enjoy lunch with your furry friend after going to Sardinia Bay beach or the Sacramento trail in Schoenmakerskop.

  6. Blue Waters Café (Marik’s pick)
Marik is a family friend that spends so many weekends with us that we had to include his input. He chose Blue Waters Café for the fabulous view, friendly service and great milkshakes and food. Marik is a vegetarian and Blue Waters has lots of veggie options to choose from. Its prime spot overlooking Shark Rock Pier makes it the perfect place to enjoy Sunday Lunch after visiting the beach.

The Lookout near Kirkwood is our family’s favourite. Sunday buffets are value for money and their a la carte menu has lots to offer from Wednesday to Saturday. Their food is delicious and staff are very friendly. Remember to book your table ahead of time as there are many functions and weddings held at this lovely venue that overlooks the valley.
