5 Things to Do in the Central Drakensberg

5 Things to Do in the Central Drakensberg

When we headed for a week in the Central Drakensberg recently, our goal was to do as little as possible – this was our annual holiday and we badly needed a break. We booked a week’s timeshare at the Drakensberg Sun and headed into the mountains dreaming of long lazy morning lie-ins,  afternoon naps and plenty of early nights – completely contrary to our usual action-packed adventures.

After a day or two, we had done exactly what we planned – absolutely nothing. Although very relaxing for some of us, cabin fever started to kick in for others and our teens were starting to bounce off the walls and each other. So, we reluctantly emerged from our beds, grabbed our backpacks and headed off each day to see what the Central Berg has in store for adventurous families.

Hiking Cape Recife’s Roseate Tern Trail – a photo blog

Hiking Cape Recife’s Roseate Tern Trail – a photo blog

We have often visited Cape Recife Nature Reserve to see the lighthouse and beach, but had never done it’s Roseate Tern hiking trail until recently. The 9km trail leads along a spectacularly wild beach and winds its way past an ancient beacon and lighthouse, through some impressive World War II ruins to an amazing viewpoint, across wetlands singing with birds, past a couple of dams with a peaceful bird hide in a circular route that ends where it starts.

We thoroughly enjoyed the entire hike, particularly the ruined army barracks and military observation post and highly recommend it as an ideal day outing for families and one of the top things to do in Port Elizabeth.

Here is a photo tour of the lovely hiking trail:

Little Things That Make a Big Difference

Little Things That Make a Big Difference

We recently attended a couple of events that highlighted what impact we, as consumers, can have on the environment just by the simple choices we make every day.

I have to admit, although we take great care in not supporting tourism products that exploit wildlife and negatively impact the environment, we don’t give a lot of thought to how the essential items we consume every day (like water and chocolate) impact the environment. We make most of our choice based on economics, convenience and preference.

Knysna – Nature’s Best Playground for Families

Knysna – Nature’s Best Playground for Families

Put together South Africa’s largest forest, an impressive lagoon flanked by pristine beaches and surround it all with majestic mountains and voila – family paradise!

A little while back, Ralph and I were hiking through Knysna’s ancient  forest, walking silently with just our thoughts for company. In between our quiet contemplation, I heard our tour guide mention that the trail we were on was the route used by Knysna Scootours and my ears perked right up. As much as we adore putting one foot in front of the other in South Africa’s most spectacularly wild and unspoilt locations, our teenage boys find this somewhat “lame” and far prefer to dash at death defying speeds through nature’s best playgrounds.

And so, we returned with our boys in tow to discover what delights Knysna has up it’s sleeve for families.
